Layers, Layers, Layers!

With winter behind us, layering  is not something we typically think much about in these highly anticipated warmer months.

But when it comes to area rugs, we'll make an exception!   After moving into our new home with wall-to-wall WHITE  carpet, it begged the question.....can I layer an area rug over carpet?  Why would anyone do this, you ask?  For me, it was to anchor the space, create some visual interest, and if I'm being COMPLETELY honest, to protect that daunting white carpet from being destroyed by my children and puppy!

So, should you layer an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet??  We say, GO FOR IT!  For that matter, layer various area rugs on top of each other for an even more eclectic look in ANY space!

The key to layering carpet over carpet is to vary the texture. Area rugs generally work best over short-pile or looped carpet. In those cases, laying a thick, luxurious shag rug adds a wonderful sense of softness and elegance to the space.

Check out these rooms that have mastered the "area rug over carpet" look. Notice how the textures are varied, and the rugs add some color and interest to the space!

And we LOVE the layered look of these multiple textured and patterend rugs below.  Highlight a special piece of furniture like a coffee table or chest by layering a smaller rug on top of a larger one. This draws attention to the center of the room and directs the eye to that specific area.

Putting two or three on top of one another in your living room or bedroom really has a way of adding coziness and personality to a room. Large area rugs can cost some big bucks,  so naturally, the layered rug solution is a cheaper way to fill a larger space. Start small with a few accent rugs and then go big with giant area rugs if you really love the look. If you already have one rug in a room, you’re already halfway there!
